How to choose the right outdoor PIR (motion) sensor for your KNX smart home

If you've ever had a porch light switch on as you walked up to your front door, or triggered a security light just by crossing the driveway, you've probably set off a PIR sensor. PIR stands for passive infrared: the sensor detects changes in heat as a person or animal moves through its detection area. That movement can then switch on a light, send an alert or trigger another smart home action. It's one of the most common technologies behind outdoor motion-activated lighting and security devices, including sensors designed for a KNX smart home.
Choosing the right one, though, is a bigger decision than it looks. Outdoors is a much harder environment than any room in your home: changing temperatures, passing traffic, animals, moving vegetation and changing daylight can all affect how reliably a sensor performs. Choosing the right one comes down to a handful of criteria that matter far more outside than in.

Weatherproofing: check the IP rating first

Every outdoor sensor should have an IP (Ingress Protection) rating, and it's one of the first things to check. The two digits indicate the level of protection against solid particles and water.

For outdoor use, look for a product specifically designed for exterior installation and check its IP rating against how exposed the location will be. A sheltered position under an eave has different requirements from a sensor fully exposed to wind and rain. The Theben theLuxa P300 KNX, for example, is rated IP55 and designed for outdoor wall or ceiling mounting.
 

Detection range, angle and zoning

matter and reduce unwanted triggers from neighbouring paths or other areas outside your property. Its direction-detection functions can also allow different responses depending on how movement passes through the monitored area.

Don't look at the maximum detection range alone. How someone approaches a PIR sensor can make a significant difference to how far away they are detected. PIR sensors generally detect movement across their detection zones more effectively than movement directly towards them. This means a sensor positioned to watch across a driveway or path may perform differently from the same sensor facing directly towards someone approaching the house.

Look for the combination of range, angle, zoning and direction detection that suits the area you actually want to monitor, especially if the sensor will face a public road, pavement or shared path.

Wired or wireless: match the sensor to the location

Outdoor sensors are often needed exactly where running a new KNX bus cable is hardest: on a gate post, a garden wall or the far corner of a façade. If running a KNX bus cable to the location isn't practical, a suitable KNX RF sensor may offer an alternative by communicating with the installation wirelessly.
Bear in mind that wireless communication doesn't always mean completely cable-free: depending on the sensor, a local power supply may still be needed. It's worth deciding this before you choose a product, since not every outdoor motion sensor is available for both KNX TP and KNX RF.
 

What do you want it to do: lighting, security or both?

Finally, decide what you want the sensor to do before you compare specifications. For lighting, detecting movement in the right area may be all that's required. A KNX motion sensor can also contribute to security-related automation, for example by switching on exterior lighting or triggering a notification when movement is detected.
Security is different. If detection is intended to form part of an intrusion alarm system, use equipment designed and certified for that purpose rather than assuming an outdoor automation sensor can take on the same role. A dedicated intrusion alarm system can handle the security-critical alarm functions, while KNX can connect these events with other appropriately configured functions around the home. Your installer can configure the systems to work together where appropriate.
 

The right sensor is the one that matches its spot

There's no single best outdoor PIR sensor, only the one that matches where it's going: how exposed it is, what it's watching and what you want it to do when it detects something.
Consider weatherproofing, detection range and angle, brightness control, installation location and wired or wireless connectivity together. A certified KNX professional can then help translate those requirements into the right product and configuration for your home.
