As building automation systems become more interconnected and integrated into wider IT infrastructures, cybersecurity is no longer optional. Regulatory developments in Europe, including the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), are accelerating the need for encrypted communication across all building systems.
While security has already become a standard requirement in many areas of building automation, HVAC systems are now increasingly part of this shift. Given their central role in comfort and energy performance, their secure integration is becoming essential.
KNX addresses this challenge through KNX Data Secure, enabling encrypted and authenticated communication at protocol level. This evolution is driving the development of solutions that extend secure communication to HVAC integration.
In this context, solutions such as the Intesis KNX Secure portfolio enable encrypted, bidirectional communication between HVAC systems and KNX installations, while remaining fully configurable via ETS. These solutions support both new installations and retrofit scenarios, including the integration of brand-specific systems (e.g. Mitsubishi Electric) as well as IR-controlled units in mixed environments.
More broadly, the market is clearly moving toward:
- Encrypted communication as a standard requirement within KNX networks
- Alignment with emerging European cybersecurity regulations
- Continued demand for interoperability across multiple HVAC brands
- The need to securely integrate existing installations in retrofit projects
This evolution reflects a broader transition in building automation: all system components, including HVAC, are expected to meet the same cybersecurity standards. As a result, integrators and manufacturers must balance security, interoperability and flexibility when designing future-proof solutions.
Intesis is contributing to this transition by expanding its KNX Secure portfolio, supporting secure HVAC integration across a wide range of applications.
